You will then be able to install Winsteps on the ARM version of Windows running in virtualization on Apple Silicon. Bottom line for me is use Virtual Machine app not a partition app. I have found VMWare support services to be excellent if anything goes wrong (which since about version 8 is hardly ever). Just to say you don't need the latest and greatest Mac for it to run smoothly.

I run Winsteps and Facets quite happily on my MacBook Pro (which is about 5 years old now) but that said, it runs faster and smoother on my iMac which is about 6 years old. I used to just output the file and open it in Excel on the Mac side. I do install Microsoft Office on the PC side because having Winsteps open PC Excel is a little more seamless but I didn't always do that.

I do save and run my control files and data from my Mac desktop because GW firewalls are annoying but I know other Mac users who run their control files straight from their organization servers. Once installed, your PC desktop will always reflect your Mac Desktop. Then install Winsteps and Facets because your Mac now operates like a PC in the Fusion app. It doesn't come with an OS because Fusion can run any OS you want. VMWare is pretty seamless and enables me to work on my Mac and Window simultaneously.Īfter installing Fusion, then install the Windows operating system. Way back in the day, I tried Bootcamp and other partition software and it's really not a good way to go. I use VMWare Fusion to create a Windows based OS on my Mac. One last thought Re: Fusion, this App allows dual mounted drives so I can drag and drop files from one OS to the other. Winsteps has never complained and my solutions are exactly the same as my students who run Ministeps on Windows machines.

This solution path runs the full Windows OS in a Mac window.

Fusion costs under 100.00 and you need a licensed version of Windows. Have been using Winsteps and Facets successfully that way.įor many years, over 10 maybe 15 I have used VM Fusion to load a virtual Windows session in my Mac. I use VMWare Fusion to run Windows on my Mac. We don't have this experience with VMWare Fusion.

And somewhat surprisingly, performance is pretty solid, despite the fact that CrossOver is being emulated to run its x86 code through Apple’s Rosetta 2 tool - and then CrossOver itself is emulating Windows.Īs Jeremy White from the CrossOver team writes, “I can't tell you how cool that is there is so much emulation going on under the covers.Installing Winsteps - Facets - Ministep - Minifac on a Mac or Linux Installing Winsteps - Facets - Ministep - Minifac on a Mac or LinuxĤ0+ active users have told me about installing Winsteps on Mac or Linux computers. And out of the box, M1 Macs can run the latest version of CrossOver, so Windows apps are on the table. However, Boot Camp isn’t the only way to run Windows apps - for years, CrossOver has provided a way to run Windows software on Linux, macOS and Chrome OS via the Wine open-source Windows compatibility layer. Obviously, there’s no version of Windows that can run on the M1 chip, so Boot Camp is off the table for now. One thing that’s getting lost in the transition to M1 is Boot Camp, a tool that allowed you to install and run Windows on a separate partition of your Mac’s hard drive. Apple’s new M1-powered Macs appear to meet the company’s audacious speed claims, but there are still some drawbacks compared to Intel Macs.
